Placenta also acts as an endocrine tissue as it also secretes the following hormones:
(a) Estrogens and progesterone which are mainly secreted by the ovaries. (b) Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) which maintains the corpus luteum for continued secretion of progesterone to maintain pregnancy. (c) At the end of gestation period, it secretes relaxin hormone which softens the pubic symphysis for easy child birth.
