Yes, a natural disaster can cause the mass extinction of species which is always "Sudden and abrupt" and also group specific e.g. sudden extinction of highly flourished dinosaurs of Jurassic period of Mesozoic era in Cretaceous period either due to hitting of the earth by an iridium-rich meteorite or due to global cooling
