As the nascent oxygen is highly reactive so can readily oxidize the biomolecules like DNA, RNA, proteins, etc. of aerobes so causing mutations and undesirable changes in their metabolic pathways. So in the evolutionary trend, oxygen proved to be first major toxic pollutant
