Opiates include opium and its derivatives like morphine and codein. Opium is obtained from the dried latex of unripe capsules of white poppy plant. These act as depressant and analgesic (pain killers) so lessen pain, reduce tension and anxiety, lower blood pressure and respiration rate, constrict the pupil etc.
