(a) Opium is the most common opioid obtained from the dried latex of unripe capsules of white poppy plant-Papaver somniferum.
(b) Effects of opium - opium acts as depressant and analgesic so lessens pain, reduces tension, lowers blood pressure and respiration rate, and reduces visual activity. Its overdose may block respiration and cause death.
