Explain why an organic liquid vaporises at a temperature below its boiling point in steam distillation?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In steam distillation, water and organic substance vaporise together and total vapour pressure becomes equal to atmospheric pressure i.e.,
Vapour pressure of organic substance + Vapour pressure of water = Atmospheric pressure.
This means that the organic compound vaporises and gets distilled at lower temperature than its boiling point.
