The mixture is shaken with sodium bicarbonate and extracted with ether or chloroform when nitrobenzene goes into organic layer. Nitrobenzene is then obtained by distillation of the solvent. The filtrate is acidified with dil. HCl and the solution is cooled. Filtration gives benzoic acid.
