A compound having bcc geometry has atomic mass 50. Calculate the density of the unit cell if its edge length is 290 pm.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Length of edge, a = 290 m
= `290 xx 10^(-10) cm`
Since it is bcc arrangment
No. of atoms in the cell unit cell, Z = 2
Atomic mass of the element , `M = 50 g mol^(-1)`
Density = `(Z xx M)/(a^3 xx N_A)`
`= (2 xx 50 g mol^(-1))/((290 xx 10^(-10) cm)^(3) xx (6.022 xx 10^(23) mol^(-1)))`
`= 6.81 g cm^(-3)`
