In solid, oxide ions are arranged in ccp. One sixth of the tetrahedral voids are occupied by the cations (A) while one third of the octahedral voids, are occupied by the cations (B). What is the formula of the compound ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
`PQO_3`

Suppose the number of oxide ions = N
No. of octahedral voids = N
No. of tetrahedral voids = 2N
No. of cations P present = `1/6 xx 2N = 1/3 N`
No. of cations Q present = `1/3 xx N = N/3`
Ratio `P : Q : O^(2-)`
`N/3 : N/3 : N or 1 : 1 : 3 . `
Formula of compound = `PQO_3`.
