What is difference in bahavior between glass and sodium chloride would you expect to observe if you break off a piece of either cube ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The glass (an amorphous solid) would break irregularly, usually in curved shapes because its component molecules are not arranged in an ordered pattern. On the other hand, sodium chloride (an ionic solid) would break off along flat surfaces parallel to the faces of the cube because the planes of its component ions are parallel to the faces of the crystalline cube..
