In a face centered lattice of X and Y, X...

In a face centered lattice of X and Y, X atoms are present at the corners while Y atoms are at face centres.
(a) What is the formula of the compound ?
(b) What would be the formula of the compound if (i) one of the X atoms is missing from a corner in each unit cell
(ii) one of the X atoms at from a corner is replaced by Z atom. (also monovalent) ?

(a) No. of X atoms in the unit cell = `8 xx 1//8 = 1`
No. of Y atoms in the unit cell = `6 xx 1/2 = 3`
Formula = `XY_3`
(ii) If one X atoms is missing, no. of X atoms = `7//8`
Formula `X_(7//8)Y_(3)` or `X_(7)Y_(24)`.
(iii) If two X atoms are missing, no. of X atoms = `6//8 = 3//4`
Formula = `X_(3//4)Y_(3) ` or = `XY_4`
(iii) No. of Y atoms = `7//8`, No. of Z atoms = `1//8`
No. of Y atoms = 3
Formula = `X_(7//8) Y_(3)Z_(1//8) ` or `X_(7)Y_(24)Z`.
