What makes a glass different from a solid such as quartz? Under what conditions could quartz be converted into glass?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Quartz is a crystalline solid in which `SiO_4` tetrahedral units are arranged in an orderly arrangement. Glass is a supercooled liquid, in which `SiO_4` tetrahedral units are not arranged in any regular order.
Quartz can be converted into glass by melting the quartz and then cooling it rapidly.
