Which will be adsorbed more readily on the surface of charcoal and why`-NH_(3)` or `CO_(2)`?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`NH_3` has higher critical temperature than `CO_2` and therefore, it is more easily liquefiable. Hence, `NH_3` has greater intermolecular forces of attraction and will be adsorbed more readily.

Which of the two, He and Ne , gets adsorbed on the surface of charcoal more readily and why?

Give reasons for the following observations : (a) A deal is formed at the meeting point of sea water and river water. (b) NH_(3) gas adsorbs more readily than N_(2) gas on the surface of charcoal. (c ) Powdered substances are more effective adsorbents.

Adsorption is a surface phenomenon and it differs feom adsorption which occurs throughout the body of the substance which absorbs. In physisorption, the attractive forces are mainly van der Waals' forces while in chemisorption actual bonding occurs between the particles of adsorbent and adsorbente. Generally, easily liquefying gases are adsorbed more easily on the surface of a solid as compared to teh gases whihc are liquefied with difficult. Adsorption increases with the increases in pressure and decreases as the temperature is increases. The ease with which the gases H_(2),CH_(4),CO_(2)and NH_(3) are adsorbed on the surface of charcoal is :
