Assertion: The passage of H(2)S through ...

Assertion: The passage of `H_(2)S` through aqueous solution of `SO_(2)` gives yellow turbidty of `S` in solution. Reason: The yellow turbidity of `S` is in colloidal state due to oxidation of `H_(2)S` by `SO_(2)(aq)`.

Text Solution

On passing `H_2S` through an aqueous solution of `SO_2`, oxidation of `H_2S` takes place.
`2H_2S + SO_2 to underset("Colloidal")(3S) + 2H_2O`
The particles of sulphur formed get condensed to be in the colloidal range. Therefore, milky solution containing colloidal particles of sulphur is formed.
