(i) What is the role of cryolite in the extraction of aluminium ?
(ii) What is the role of limestone in the extraction of iron from its oxides ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Limestone decomposes to form lime (Cao) and carbon dioxide (CO). The lime, thus, produced acts as a flux and combines with silica (present as impurity in oxides of iron) to produce slag.
`underset("Limestone")(CaCO_3) to CaO + CO_2`
`underset("Lime")(CaO) + SiO_2 to underset("Calcium silicate (slag)")(CaSiO_3)`
