Why copper matte is put in silica lined converter?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The copper matte containing `Cu_2 S` and FeS is put in silica lined convertor. Some silica is also added and hot air blast is blown to convert remaining FeS to FeO, which is removed as slag with silica.
`2FeS + 3O_2 to 2FeO + 2SO_2`
`FeO + SiO_2 to FeSi O_3`
`Cu_2 S ` or `CuO` gets converted to copper .
`2Cu_2 S + 3O_2 to 2Cu_2 O + 2SO_2`
`2Cu_2 O + Cu_2 S to 6Cu + SO_2`
