Read each staremnt below carefully and state with reasons and expamples if it is true or false ,
(a) with zero speed at an instant may have non-zero accelration at that instant
(b) with zero speed may have non-zero velocity
(c ) with positive constant speed must have zero accleration
(d) with positive value of acceleration must be speeding up.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) True
When a body is projected upwards then at the highest point, velocity=0, acceleration is equal to acceleration due to gravity and is `9.8 ms^(-2)` vertically downwards.
(b) False. As velocity of the body is the speed in a particular direction . if speed is zero then velocity is also zero.
(c ) True. When a body is moving in a straight line with constant speed then velocity of the body is constant and for constant velocity, acceleration is zero.
(d) False. when velocity is negative and acceleration is positive then body slows down.

Assertion :- A particle having zero acceleration must have constant speed. Reason :- A Particle having constant speed must have zero acceleration.

Can a prticle in one- dimensional motion have zero speed and a non-zero velocity ?

A rigid body is free to rotate about an axis. Can the body have non-zero angulalr acceleration of an instant when its angular velocity is zero?

Read each statement below carefully and state with reasons, if it is true ot false. (a) During rolling the force of friction acts in the same direction as the direction of motion of c.m of the body. (b) The instantaneous speed of the point of contact during rolling is zero. (c ) The instantaneous acceleration of the point of contact during rolling is zero. (d) For perfect rolling motion, work done against friction is zero. (e) A wheel moving down a perfectly frictionless inclined plane will undergo slipping (not rolling motion).

Can a paticle have (i) zero speed and non - zero velocity ? (ii) constant velocity but a varying speed ? (iii) constant speed but a varying velcoity ?

Assertion : A particle may be momentarily at rest and yet have non-zero acceleration. Reason : The zero velocity of a particle at any instant does not necessarily imply zero acceleration at that instant.

Assertion: A body having non zero acceleration can have a constant velocity. Reason: Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity.
