Biotechnology is one of those difficult terms that can mean differ ent things to different people. Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary branch incorporating Biological and Technological innovation for the benefit of human kind. In essence, it is the use of an organism (usually a microorganism) or a biologically derived substance (usually an en zyme) in a production or conversion process. Thus brewing and wine making, food processing and manufacture, the production of pharma ceuticals and even the treatment of sewage can all be classified as different aspects of biotechnology. Modern biotechnology is often asso ciated with the use of genetically modified system. The products of biotechnological processes are destined for use in a variety of fields such as medicine, agriculture and scientific research. Industrial revolution modernised Europe and bypassed the third world countries. Biotechnology revolution too seems to become a mo nopoly of the economically prosperous and technically advanced coun tries of the North. One danger is that some of the profit-motive agro business firms in these countries are making use of biotechnological techniques to make high breeding varieties of seeds suitable for a particular type of fertilizer and pesticide, thus linking the sale of seeds with the sale of the fertilizer and pesticide. It is feared that advances in biotechnology will enable multination al companies to have more control over the genetic resources of the third world which have the largest gene pool in the world.
