Why do we need to encourage watershed development?

We need to encourage watershed development due to following reasons:
(a) To prevent run-off. (b) To increase storage and recharge of groundwater (c) Conservation, regeneration and judicious use of all resources like land, water, plants, animals etc. (d) To encourage community and people participation, for example, Neeru-Meeru, Haryali etc.
