A blacksmith fixes Iron ring on the rim ...

A blacksmith fixes Iron ring on the rim of the wooden wheel of a horse cart. The diameter of the rim and the fron ring are `5.243 m " and " 5.231`m, respectively at `27 ^(@)C`. To what temperature should the ring be heated so as to fit the rim of the wheel?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Given, `T_(1) = 27^(@) C`
` L_(T 1) = 5.231 m`
` L_(T2) = 5.243 m`
So,
` L_(T2) = L_(T1) [1 + alpha_(1) (T_(2) - T_(1)]`
` 5.243 m = 5.231 m [1 + 1.20 xx 10^(-5) K^(-1) (T_(2) - 27^(@) C)]`
or `T_(2) = 218^(@) C`.

An iron ring 1.20 m in diameter is to be put on a wooden cart wheel. The diameter of this wheel is 1.0 cm greater than that of the ring. The temperature of the ring that must be raised before it slips on the wooden wheel is (Coefficient of linear expansion of iron = 12 xx 10^(-6)//^(@) C ).

A large steel wheel is to be fitted on to a shaft of the same material. At 27 ^(@) C , the outer diameter of the shaft is 8.70 cm and the diameter of the central hole in the wheel is 8.69 cm. The shaft is cooled using dry Icel. At what temperature of the shaft does the wheel slip on the shaft? Assume coefficient of linear expansion of the steel to be constant over the required temperature range: alpha_("steel ") = 1.20 xx 10^(-5) K^(-1) .

A wheel with 10 metallic spokes each 0.5 m long is rotated with a speed of 120 rev/min in a plane normal to the horizontal component of earth's magnetic field H_E at a place. If H_E 0.4 G at the place, what is the induced emf between the axle and the rim of the wheel ? Note that 1G =10^(-4)T.
