A large steel wheel is to be fitted on to a shaft of the same material. At `27 ^(@) C`, the outer diameter of the shaft is `8.70` cm and the diameter of the central hole in the wheel is `8.69 `cm. The shaft is cooled using dry Icel. At what temperature of the shaft does the wheel slip on the shaft? Assume coefficient of linear expansion of the steel to be constant over the required temperature range:
`alpha_("steel ") = 1.20 xx 10^(-5) K^(-1)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When the shaft is cooled to temperature ` - 69 ^(@) C` the wheel can slip on the shaft .

An iron ring 1.20 m in diameter is to be put on a wooden cart wheel. The diameter of this wheel is 1.0 cm greater than that of the ring. The temperature of the ring that must be raised before it slips on the wooden wheel is (Coefficient of linear expansion of iron = 12 xx 10^(-6)//^(@) C ).

The focal length of a spherical mirror made of steel is 150 cm. IF the temperature of the mirror increases by 200 K, its focal length become (coefficient of linear expansion of steel alpha=12 times 10^-60 C^-1 )

If a cylinder of diameter 1.0cm at 30°c is to be slide into a hole of diameter 0.9997 cm in a steel plate at the same temperature, then minimum required rise in the temperature of the plate is [coefficient of linear expansion of steel = 12 xx 10^(-6) //^(@) C ]
