Determine the maximum acceleration of the train in which a box lying on its floor will remain stationary, given that the co-efficient of static friction between the box and the train’s floor is 0.15.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Since the acceleration of the box is due to the static friction,
`ma = f_s lt= mu_s N = mu_s mg `
i.e, `a lt= mu_s g `
` therefore a_(max) = mu_s g = 0.15 xx 10 ms^(-2)`
` = 1.5 ms^(-2)`

A box of mass 2 kg is placed on the roof of a car. The box would remain stationary until the car attains a maximum acceleration. Coefficient of static friction between the box and the roof of the car is 0.2 and g=10ms^(-1) . This maximum acceleration of the car, for the box to remain stationary, is
