For sound waves, the Doppler's formula for frequency shift differs slightly between the two situation :
(i) source at rest , observer moving (ii) source moving , observer at rest.
The exact Doppler formulae for the case of light waves in vacuum, are however, strictly identical for the two situations in case of light travelling in a medium ?

Sound waves require a medium for propagation. Thus even though the situations (i) and (ii) may correspond to the same relative motion (between the source and the observer), they are not identical physically since the motion of the observer relative to the medium is different in the two situations. Therefore, we cannot expect Doppler formulas for sound to be identical for (i) and (ii). For light waves in vacuum, there is clearly nothing to distinguish between (i) and (ii). Here only the relative motion between the source and the observer counts and the relativistic Doppler formula is the same for (i) and (ii). For light propagation in a medium, once again like for sound waves, the two situations are not identical and we should expect the Doppler formulas for this case to be different for the two situations (i) and (ii).

For sound waves, the Doppler formula for frequency shift differs slightly between the two situations: (i) source at rest, observer moving and (ii) source moving, observer at rest. The exact Doppler formulas for the case of light waves in vacuum are, however strictly identical for these situations. Explain why this should be so. Would you expect the formulas to be strictly identical for the two situations in case of light travelling in a medium?

Let us list some of the factors, which could possibly infuence the speed of wave propagation. (i) Nature of the source (ii) Direction of propagation (iii) Motion of the source and /or observer (iv) Wavelength v. Intensity of the wave. On which of these factors, if any, does a. the speed of light in vacuum. b. the speed of light in a medium (say, glass or water), depend?

A source emitting a sound of frequency v is placed at a large distance from an observer. The source starts moving towards the observer with a uniform acceleration a. Find the frequency heard by the observer corresponding to the wave emitted just after the source starts. The speed of sound in the medium is v.

A source od sound S emitting waves of frequency 100 Hz and an observer o are located at some distance from each other. The source is moving with a speed of 19.4 ms^-1 at an angle of 60^@ with the source observe line as shwon in the figure. The observer is at rest. The apparent frequency observed by the observer (velocity of sound in air 330 ms^-1 is:
