Calculate and compare the energy release...

Calculate and compare the energy released by (a) fusion of 1.0kg of hydrogen deep within the sun, and (b) the fission of 1.0kg of `U^(235)` in a fission reactor.

Text Solution

(a) Note that in the interior of Sun, four ` ""_(1)^(1)H` nuclei combine to form one `""(2)^(4)He` nucleus releasing about 26 MeV of energy per event. Energy released in fusion of 1kg of hydrogen `= 39 xx 10^(26) MeV`
(b) Energy released in fission of 1kg of `""_(92)^(235) U= 5.1 xx 10^(26) MeV`
The energy released in fusion of 1 kg of hydrogen is about 8 times that of the energy eleased in the fission of 1 kg of uranium.
