Diffusion is the movement of substances from the region of their higher concentration to the region of region of lower concentration . No adsorbent is required . Energy is not liberated. Imbibition is the absorption of water by the particles of a solid, without forming a solution . It only occurs in the presence of imbibant . Heat is released .
