Which one of the following carbanions is the least stable?

A

`CH_(3)CH_(2)^(-)`

B

`HC -= C^(-)`

C

`(C_(6)H_(5))_(3)C^(-)`

D

`(CH_(3))_(3)C^(-)`

The correct Answer is:
D

The stability of carbanions is influenced by resonance and inductive effect. The groups having +I effect decreases the stability. While groups having -I effect increase the stability of the carbanions. Greater the no. of alkyl groups on the carbon atom carrying the negative charge, greater would be the inensity of electrons on the negative charge on carbon and hence less stable would be carbanion.
