Calculate the effective nuclear charge experienced by the 4s electron in potassium atom.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The electronic configuration of K atom is
`K_19 = (1s^2) (2s^2 2p^6) (3s^2 3p^6) 4s^(1)`
Effective nuclear charge (Z*) = Z – S
Z* `=19 - [(0.85xx" No. of electron in "(n-1)^(th)" shell" + (1.00" total number of electron in the inner shells")]`
`=19 - [ 0.85 xx (8) + (1.00 xx 10)]`
Z* `= 2.20`
