A guy wire attached to a vertical pole of height 18m is 24m long and has a stake attached to the other end. How far from the base of the pole should the stake be driven so that the wire will be taut?

The correct Answer is:
`6sqrt(7)`

Let AB be the vertical pole and C be the position of the stake so that BC is a taut wire.
In rt. `Delta ABC, angle A=90^(@), AB =BC=24m`
Now, `AC^(2)+AB^(2)=BC^(2)rArr AC^(2)=(24^(2)-18^(2)) m^(2)=252 m^(2) rArr AC=sqrt(252) n= 6 sqrt(7)m`.
