One litre of a gas is maintained at pressure 72 cm of mercury. It is compressed isothermally so that its volume becomes `900 cm^3` . The values of stress and strain will be respectively

A

` 0.106 N m^(-2)` and 1.0

B

`1.06 Nm^(-2)` and 0.1

C

`106.62 N m^(-2)` and 0.2

D

`10662.4 N m^(-2)` and 0.1 34

The correct Answer is:
D

According to boyle.s law `P_2V_2 = P_1V_1`
`P_2 = P_1 (V_1/V_2) " or " P_2 = 72 xx 1000/900 = 80 cm ` of Hg
stress = increase in pressure
` = P_2 - P_1 = 80 - 72 = 8 cm `of Hg
` = (8 xx 10^(-2)) xx 13.6 xx 10^3 xx 9.8 = 10662.4Nm^(-2)`
Volumetric strain ` = (V_1 - V_2)/(V_1) = (1000 - 900)/(1000) = 0.1`
