In an industrial process 10 kg of water ...

In an industrial process 10 kg of water per hour is to be heated from `20^@C` to `80^@C`. To do this steam at `150^@C` is passed from a boiler into a copper coil immersed in water. The steam condenses in the coil and is returned to the boiler as water at `90^@C`. How many kilograms of steam is required per hour (specific heat of steam`=1 cal//g^@C`, Latent heat of vapourization`=540 cal//g`)?

A

Heat gained by water in one hour is` 6 xx 10^5` cal.

B

Mass of steam required per hour is 1 kg.

C

Mass of steam required per hour is 1000 kg.

D

Heat gained by water on boiling in one hour is `540 xx 10^2` cal

The correct Answer is:
A, B

Mass of water to be heated `= M = 10 kg `
`= 10 ,000 ` gram
Let m grams be the mass of strem required per hour to raise the temperature of water
Now , heat gainead by water in the boiler in one hour `=Mst `
`= 10,000 xx 1 xx (80 -20 )=6,00,000` calories
heat lost by steam `=m xx 1 xx ( 150 -100 ) + m xx L +m xx 1 (100-90 )`
` = 50 m + 540 m + 10 m`
`= 600 m ` caloric
`[ :. L= 540 cal //g ]`
Now , from the priniciple of calorimetry
Heat lost = heat gained
`therefore 600 m = 6,00,000 or m=1000`
therefore , mass of steam requied per hour is 1000 gram or 1 kg .
