Why did Gandhiji begin an indefinite fast on 20th September 1932?

(i) Gandhiji started an indefinite fast to protest against the communal award declared by the British. It provided communal electorate not only for the Muslims, but for the Sikhs and depressed classes.
(ii) The award was divisive in nature and would further polarise Indian society.
