"Iron and steel industry is called a basic industry due to the following reasons:
(a) The industry forms a base for all other industries.
(b) No industry can be imagined that does not make use of iron and steel in one form or the other.
(c) The industry lays the foundation of rapid development of all other sectors in the economy - agriculture, etc. It is a heavy industry because of the following reasons:
(a) Its raw materials are bulky.
(b) Other minerals used like limestone, manganese, etc. are also bulky.
(c) Coal used as source of power in blast furnaces is also bulky.
(d) And finally its finished products are also bulky.
