Organisms like earthworms and leeches have no skeleton to anchor the ends of muscles. Still, they show movements. How ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

These animals have hydrostatic skeleton which provides support and shape to the body. The animals with hydroskeleton have (i) set of circular muscles which, by contraction, decrease the diameter and increase the length of the body, and (ii) a set of antagonistic longitudinal muscles, which by their contraction, decrease the length and increase the diameter of the body. Earthworm moves by contractions of the body-wall muscles aided by setae. Leech moves by looping action of its body on a substratum with the help of anterior and posterior suckers.
