Muscles require ATP to relax as well as to contact. On animal's death, its muscles soon exhaust. ATP and lose the ability to contract or relax. They become rigidly locked in whatever position they were when ATP was used up. This posmortem (after death) stiffening of the body from hardening of muscle tissue is called rigor mortis.
