Describe the initiation process of transcription in bacteria.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) This process is called transcription in prokaryotes. In prokaryotes, the structural genes are polycistronic and continuous. (ii) There is single DNA - dependent RNA polymorase that catalyses transcription of all the three types of RNA (mRNA, tRNA, rRNA).
(iii) RNA Polymerase binds to the promotor and initiates the process alongwith certain initiation factors.
(iv) The enzyme facilitates the opening of the DNA helix and elongation continues.
(v) The nascent RNA separates called terminaton of transcription and is facilitated by certain termination factors.
(vi) Translation can start much before the mRNA is fully tmascribed, i.e., transcription and translation can be coupled.
