What is nucleosome ? How many base pairs are present in a typical nucleosome ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In eukaryotes, the packaging of DNA helix is peculiar and complex. There are basic proteins called histones which are positively charged due to abundance of basic amino acid residues lysine and arginine. Histones are organised to form a unit consisting of eight molecules. This unit is called histone octamer. DNA molecule is negatively charged and therefore gets wrapped around the positively charged histone octamer. This complex structure is called nucleosome. About 200 base pairs are present in a typical nucleosome.
