Streptokinase is the enzyme obtained from cultures of Streptococcus and modified by genetic engineering. This enzyme is used as a clot buster for removing clots from the blood vessels through dissolution of intravascular fibrin. It is effective in those patients who have undergone mycoardial infarction leading to heart attack.
Streptokinase is also known as Tissue Plasminogen Activator (TPA).
