A heavy uniform rope is held vertically ...

A heavy uniform rope is held vertically and is tensioned by clamping it to a rigid support at the lower end. A wave of a certain frequency is set up at the lower end. Will the wave travel up the rope with the same speed?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

No, as the rope is heavy, i.e. it has its own considerable weight. So, tension increases along the rope from the lower end to the upper end and hence, the wave will travel up the rope with an increasing velocity.
