Why is note produces by an open organ pipe sweeter that that produced by a closed organ pipe of same length?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

This is because the note produced by an open organ pipe consists of both odd and even harmonics but the note produced by a closed organ pipe consists of only the odd harmonics. So, note of open organ pipe consists of large number of overtones of harmonics and hence it is sweeter to our ears.

Organ pipes are musical instruments which are used for producing musical sound by blowing air into the pipe. Organ pipes are of two types: closed organ pipes are closed at one end and open at the other. Open organ pipes are open at both ends. The study shows that the overall musical sound produced by an open organ piipe is richer than the musical sound produced by a closed organ pipe. Read the above passage and answer the following questions: (i) Why the overall musical sound produced by an open organ pipe is richer than the musical sound produced by a closed organ pipe ? (ii) What does this study imply in day to day life ?

STATEMENT-1: An open organ pipe can be used as a musical instrument but not a closed organ pipe. STATEMENT-2: The fundamental frequency of an open orgna pipe is twice the fundamental frequency of a closed organ pipe of the same length.

The fundamental frequency in an open organ pipe is equal to the third harmonic of a closed organ pipe. If the length of the closed organ pipe is 20 cm, the length of the open organ pipe is

The fundamental note produced by a closed organ pipe is of frequency v. The fundamental note produced by an open organ pipe of same length will be of frequency

An open organ pipe has fundamental frequency 300Hz.The first overtone of the open organ pipe is the same as the first overtone of a closed organ pipe. The length of the closed organ pipe is (v_(sound)=330m/s) (A) 10cm (B) 41cm (C) 82cm (D) 164cm

The fundamental note produced by a closed organ pipe is of frequency . f The fundamental note produced by an open organ pipe of same length will be of frequency

Why is the sound produced by an organ pipe open at both ends is better than that of an organ pipe closed at one end ?

First overtone frequency of a closed organ pipe is equal to the first overtone frequency of an open organ pipe. Further nth harmonic of closed organ pipe is also equal to the nth harmonic of open pipe, where n and m are

The frequency of 2^(nd) overtone of an open organ pipe is equal to frequency of first harmonic of a closed organ pipe. If the length of open pipe is 80 cm, then find the length of closed pipe.
