A steel rod 100 cm long is clamped at its middle. The fundamental frequency of longitudinal vibrations of the rod is given to be 2.53k Hz. What is the speed of sound in steel?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Here length of rod, l = 100 cm.
As the rod is clamed in the middle, the wavelength of sound in the material of the rod is given by
`lambda = 2l` = 200 cm = 2 m
Frquency of the note, v = 2.53 kHz
`= 2.53 xx 1000` Hz
Speed of sound in rod,
`upsilon_(r) = v lambda = 2.53 xx 1000 xx 2ms^(-1)`
`= 5.06 kms^(-1)`
