A sonometer wire is vibrating is resonance with a tuning fork. Keeping the tension applied same, the length of the wire is doubled. Under what conditions would the tuning fork still be in resonance with the wire?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Let l be the length of the sonometer wire, when it is in resonance with the tuning fork.
Keeping tension same, when the length of the wire is doubled, the wire of length 2l will vibrate in its second harmonic, hence the tuning fork will resonate at length 2l.
