Set up a relation between speed of sound...

Set up a relation between speed of sound in a gas and root mean sqare velocity of the molecules of that gas.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Speed of sound in a gas is given by `v = sqrt((gamma P)/(rho))" "…(i)`
Root mean square velocity (C) as obtained using kinetic theory of gases is given by
`C = sqrt((3P)/(rho))" "…(ii)`
Dividing (i) by (ii) we get
`(v)/(C)=sqrt((gamma P)/(rho)) = sqrt((gamma)/(3))`
`v= sqrt((gamma)/(3)).C`
