In the experiment to determine the speed of sound using a resonance column,

A

prongs of the tuning fork are kept in a vertical plane.

B

prongs of the tuning fork are kept in a horizontal plane.

C

in one of the two resonances observed, the length of the resonating air column is close to the wavelength of sound in air.

D

in one of the two resonances observed, the length of the resonating air column is close to half of the wavelength of sound in air.

The correct Answer is:
A

Prongs of the tuning fork are kept in a vertical plane to produce longitudinal vibrations in the air column. Hence option (a) is correct.
Since it is a case of closed organ pipe and hence for first resonance, length of the tube is approximately half of the wavelength and for the second resonance, length of the tube is approximately 1.5 times the wavelength. So we can see that options (c) and (d) cannot be correct.

A student performed the experiment to measured the speed of sound in air using resonance air-column method. Two resonances in the air-column were obtained by lowering the water level. The resonance with the shoter air-column is the first resinance and that with the longer air-column is the second resonance. then,

In an experiment to measure the speed of sound by a resonating air column, a tuning fork of frequency 500 Hz is used. The length of the air column is varied by changing the leavel of water in the resonance tube. Two successive resonances are heard at air columns of length 50.7 cm and 83.9 cm. Which of the following statements is (are) true?

In an experiment to determine the speed of sound, a student stands 150 m from a wall and claps. When he claps once, what is the time interval between the sound of the clap and its echo heard by the student, in terms of v, the speed of sound?

A tuning fork of frequency 480 Hz is used in an experiment of measuring speed of sound (v) in air by resonance tube method. Resonance is observed to occur at two successive lengths of the air column, l_(1)=30cm and l_(2)=70cm . Then, v is equal to:
