Outer hard shells of two eggs are removed. One of the eggs is placed in pure water and the other is placed in saturated solution of sodium chloride. What will be observed and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The egg placed in water will swell due to osmosis of pure water into the egg. On the other hand, the egg placed in saturated solution of NaCl will shrink due to osmosis of water out of the egg. This is because osmosis always occurs from higher concentration of solvent to lower concentration of solvent.
