`Br_(2)` and `I_(2)` are added to a solution containing `1M` each of `Br^(c-)` and `I^(c-)` . What reaction will occur ?

Text Solution

Since the reduction potential of `Br_(2)` is more than that of `I_(2)` , it means that bromine can readily be reduced and it will oxidise `I^(-) ` to `I_(2)` . Therefore , the following reaction will occur :
`Br_(2) + 2I^(-) to 2 Br^(-) + I_(2)`
Since the feasibility of the reaction , the E.M.F should be positive , therefore , to get positive value for the overall cell reaction , subtract the equation representing lower value of `E^(Theta)` from the equation representing the higher value of `E^(Theta)` . Thus , substract Eq. (i) from Eq. (ii).
`Br_(2) + 2 I^(-) to 2 Br^(-) + I_(2)`
`E^(Theta) = 1.08 - 0.54 = 0.54` V
