Silver is electro-deposited on a metallic vessel of surface area 900 `cm^(2)` by passing a current of 0.5 ampere for 2 hours. Calculate the thickness of silver deposited, given that its density is 10.5 g `cm^(-3)`. (At. mass of Ag=108 amu).

Silver is deposited as `Ag^(+) + e^(-) to Ag`
Quantity of electricity passed `Q = I xx t`
`I = 0.5 ` amp , t = 2 `xx 60 xx 60 s`
`therefore Q = 0.5 xx 2 xx 60 xx 60 = 3600 C `
96500 C of electricity deposited = 108 g Ag
`3600C` of electricity deposited Ag = `(108)/(96500) xx 3600`
`= 4.029 g`
Let the thickness of silver deposited = x cm
Weight = Volume `xx` Density = Area `xx` Thickness `xx` Density
`4.029 = 900 xx x xx 10.59`
or ` x = (4.029)/(900 xx 10.59) = 4.23 xx 10^(-4) cm`.
