The half cells in a cell must be separated only if the oxidizing and reducing agent can migrate to the other half cell . In lead storage cell , the oxidizing agent , `PbO_2` and the reducing agent . Pb as well as their oxidation and reduction product `PbSO_4` are solids . Therefore , there is no need to separate half cells .
