Under what soil condition do you think a farmer would treat the soil of his fields with quick lime (calcium oxide) or slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) or chalk ( calclum carbonate)?

Most of the plants grow best when the pH of the soil is close to 7. If the soil is too acidic or too basic , the plants grow badly or do not grow at all . As quick lime , slaked lime or chalk are all alkaline substances, these would be added to the soil by the farmer when soil is highly acidic .
