Why does distilled water not conduct electricity, whereas rain water does?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Distilled water does not conduct electricity because it does not contain any ionic compounds like acids , bases or salts , dissolved in it. Rain water , while falling to the earth through the atmosphere , dissolved acidic gases like `CO_(2) , SO_(2)`. ect . from the air and form acids like carbonic acid like carbonic acid `(H_(2)CO_3)` , sulphurous acid `(H_(2)SO_(3))` , etc. These acids provide hydrogen ions `(H^(+))` to rain water . So , due to the presence of the acids, the rain water conducts electricity .
