A copper coin is kept immersed in a solution of silver nitrate for some time. What will happen to the coin and the colour of the solution?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Copper is placed above the silver in the reactivity series which indicates that copper is more reactive than silver. When a copper coin on strip is kept immersed in a solution of silver nitrate `(AgNO_3)` silver from its solution will deposit on copper coin.
`2AgNO_3(aq)_(Colourl ess)+Cu(s)to2Ag(s)+Cu(NO_3)2_(Blue)(aq)`
Copper slowly displaces silver from the `AgNO_3` solution and the colour of solution changes from colourless to blue due to formation of copper nitrate `[Cu(NO_3)_2]`. The copper coil will disappear and silver will precipitate out.
